This paradox is named after James Stockdale, a former Navy Vice Admiral who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for over seven years. During his captivity, he observed that prisoners who blindly believed they would be released soon and ignored the brutal reality of their situation often lost hope and gave up. On the other hand, those who faced the harsh realities of their situation while also maintaining faith in their ability to survive and ultimately prevail, were the ones who survived.
