SO YOU THINK YOU CAN BE AN UNDERGRADUATE!?

I don’t mean to scare or warn you. I am just another undergraduate student pursuing Engineering in the ECE domain and I am here to share some of my personal experiences and the “Skills to be an Undergraduate student”..Yes! You heard that right!
Just scoring a good rank and having all the basics of your subjects clear won’t help you to enjoy your college life even though they are enough to survive the next 3-4 years. The skills I’m going to mention about are pretty much underrated and I personally feel like, there are pretty much the basic necessary traits that every individual should have. Some are born with them while others have to cultivate them.
Okay, enough of an introduction. Let me dig in.

Communication Skills :
Once college life begins, you will come across lots of different personalities with different perspectives about everything. Communication Skills are something that are emphasized on during your last years of under graduation(especially in B.Tech) for campus placements and presentations . But I personally believe that this is not the sort of skill that can be developed overnight. You need to learn to talk to different people and maintain a bond with them coz that will bring a sense of confidence if you start doing it earlier. You don’t have to impress them or pretend, just be originally you but be more accepting of others too.

Networking:
This is also more like communication skills but here, the main focus is on developing or maintaining the bond . I’m not just focusing on your fellow batchmates here. But also on your seniors and faculty members. It is always beneficial to have referrals and connections in order to get into clubs or even in the long term.

Coding :
I bet you must have expected this in the beginning of the blog. Coding is a necessity. You don’t have to be fluent but atleast have a basic knowledge if you are in the technical background. Acing every language isn’t necessary either, but having an idea about the basics of atleast one language will do. But in the long run, if you are going to be placed in a software or IT company or even in ECE related core domain, coding always helps . It  is definitely a useful tool .

Awareness of reality :
When me and my friends entered college life , we had high expectations with respect to clubs and activities and even regarding placements. I remember my friend telling me in the first year about getting a job which earns him atleast3lacs per month. I know it is not impossible but for a beginner, maybe it is far from our reach.
What I mean to convey here is , rather than building castles in the air , always be aware of reality. Know the statistics of your senior batches and how they got placed . Have an idea about the current trends (regarding your domains , not insta trends) Plan accordingly. It’s better to work more and expect less than vice versa. Reality will keep you humbled. It’s good to dream but not to live in an illusion.

Creativity:
Creativity doesn’t always have to be about art, writing , music even though that’s what I had in mind initially while jotting this point down. Creativity always has an upper hand in whatever domain you pursue. A creative approach to a problem is always appreciated. So always learn to think in different angles and try to come up with a valid solution. Also , music and writing or any other forms of creativity are also appreciated even though it’s not a compulsion, coz these are what that are going to keep you sane and bring peace in your hectic undergrad life . Will come handy during fests too.

Learn To Be You :
In the process of trying to fit in, donot lose yourself.
When I first started my college  life , I pretended to be someone I was not in order to feel included, indulged in conversations that wouldn’t normally pique my interest.
It was a month later that I realised, that I wasn’t enjoying in this process, I felt uncomfortable. As long as you don’t have a toxic habit, you don’t have to change yourself to  fit in .
Learn to be you , but a better version. Be open to learn new things in life but always have a clear picture of who you are and don’t get influenced by others.

Time Management:
You know what it is . College life is going to be packed with assignments, records, observations etc etc.
Time management is a key tool.
Well, that’s all I have got to mention. I am just another undergraduate living my student life in my own terms and these are the few things I realised overtime . You might or might not agree with me . And if there are any more traits that you think are necessary, mention them in the comments.

Disclaimer: (I just wrote it for dramatic effect lol )
These traits are just to ease your life as an Undergraduate . But the main focus should be on gaining your technical or domain specific skills. Always be open to learning new things. Because without the actual skills, no amount of personality will get you far . So learn to balance and have fun at the same time. You will learn these naturally.
Happy Learning
