Percentage vs Percentile

Percentage:

A percentage is a number out of 100. It tells you how much you scored out of the total marks.

Percentile:

A percentile tells you how you performed compared to others. It shows the percentage of candidates who scored less than you.

🧮 Meaning:
If your percentile is 95, it means you performed better than 95% of the students who appeared for the exam.

📘 What is Percentile in JEE Main?

In JEE Main, percentile is not the percentage of marks you scored, but how you performed relative to others.

It is calculated using this formula:

Percentile = (Number of candidates who scored less than you / Total candidates appeared) × 100

Example of Percentile in JEE Main:

Let’s say 1,00,000 students appeared for JEE Main in your shift.

You scored 180 marks out of 300, and 92,000 students scored less than you.

So your percentile = (92,000 / 1,00,000) × 100 = 92%ile

This means you performed better than 92% of students who appeared in the same shift.

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • Percentile does not mean you got 92% marks.

  • Even if your marks are lower, if others scored lower than you, your percentile could be high.

  • JEE is conducted in multiple shifts, and the percentile helps normalize the scores across shifts with different difficulty levels.

In India, different entrance exams and admissions use either percentile or percentage for evaluating candidates. Here's a clear classification of major exams and what they use:

    Exams Based on Percentile

These exams use percentile scores to rank students relative to each other.

    🎯 National-Level Exams:

  • JEE Main (Engineering)

    • Conducted by: NTA

    • Used for: B.Tech/B.E. admissions

    • Result: Percentile score for each subject + overall

  • NEET UG (Medical)

    • Conducted by: NTA

    • Used for: MBBS/BDS/BAMS etc.

    • Result: Percentile along with raw marks and rank

  • CAT (MBA entrance)

    • Conducted by: IIMs

    • Used for: MBA admissions in IIMs and top B-Schools

    • Result: Scaled score and percentile

  • CLAT (Law Entrance)

    • Used in some colleges for percentile-based cutoffs

    • Generally shows All India Rank, but percentile is used in tie-breaking

  • CUET UG/PG (Central Universities)

    • Conducted by: NTA

    • Scorecard shows percentile for subject-wise ranking

  • GATE (Engineering PG entrance)

    • Conducted by: IITs

    • Normalized score is percentile-based

  • 📊 Exams Based on Percentage (or Raw Marks)

These exams or boards use raw marks/percentage directly for merit or cutoff.

    📚 School Boards:

  • CBSE / ICSE / State Boards (Class 10 & 12)

    • Result: Given in percentage or grades

    • Used for: College admissions or eligibility

  • 🎓 College Admission Based on %:

  • Delhi University UG Admissions (Non-CUET route)

    • Earlier based on Class 12 % cutoff (now uses CUET)

  • Private University Admissions (some)

    • Many private universities like SASTRA, VIT (through VITEEE), SRM consider Class 12 percentage

  • State CETs (some cases)

    • Example: TS EAMCET, KCET, MHT CET may consider raw marks or combined weightage (with 12th %)
