A percentage is a number out of 100. It tells you how much you scored out of the total marks.
A percentile tells you how you performed compared to others. It shows the percentage of candidates who scored less than you.
🧮 Meaning:
If your percentile is 95, it means you performed better than 95% of the students who appeared for the exam.
📘 What is Percentile in JEE Main?
In JEE Main, percentile is not the percentage of marks you scored, but how you performed relative to others.
It is calculated using this formula:
Percentile = (Number of candidates who scored less than you / Total candidates appeared) × 100
Let’s say 1,00,000 students appeared for JEE Main in your shift.
You scored 180 marks out of 300, and 92,000 students scored less than you.
So your percentile = (92,000 / 1,00,000) × 100 = 92%ile
This means you performed better than 92% of students who appeared in the same shift.
Percentile does not mean you got 92% marks.
Even if your marks are lower, if others scored lower than you, your percentile could be high.
JEE is conducted in multiple shifts, and the percentile helps normalize the scores across shifts with different difficulty levels.
In India, different entrance exams and admissions use either percentile or percentage for evaluating candidates. Here's a clear classification of major exams and what they use:
